I've been thinking a lot about backsplashes these days because I need to choose one for my own kitchen, which you can see above. Typically my rule of thumb is to go with a fairly simple and quiet backsplash, but of course it completely depends on your counter material. I normally go with a solid tile type of back splash without a lot of colour or detail. I think white subway tile is a pretty classic choice, but I was looking at other white tile options. Here are some finds in my sourcing, I liked the matte look of this option and was leaning towards the top right corner:
Then I saw this kitchen on kitchn.com and I liked the look of the subway tile, as I researched more about it I discovered it was a custom made tile with a very light grey grout. Here is a close up and a wider shot of the whole kitchen:
The other option I've been considering is white painted horizontal wood to add some texture and interest. This would be affordable but maybe too casual looking for my kitchen. Here is an inspiration shot of that:
